World Quantum Day: Why 4.14 Is More Than Just a Number
Why is World Quantum Day celebrated on April 14?
Because 4.14 points to one of the most important constants in physics: Planck's constant . It captures the idea that energy does not flow continuously, but in tiny packets — quanta . For light, that means it comes as individual photons . This insight is the foundation of quantum communication, high-precision sensing, and many emerging optical technologies.
Why does that matter for industry?
Because single photons are not just a physics concept. They are a technological resource . If you can measure them reliably, you unlock the foundation for secure communication, powerful LiDAR systems , and new approaches in imaging and medical technology. The challenge is that a single photon is extremely weak , especially in the infrared.
Where is the real technical bottleneck?
You can think of it as trying to hear a whisper in a crowded hall. The photon is the whisper, and detector noise is the hall. Many existing technologies therefore require cooling close to absolute zero . That makes systems bulky, expensive, and difficult to integrate . This is one of the central barriers preventing quantum technology from moving out of specialist labs and into real-world infrastructure.
So what is GeQD doing differently?
We are developing germanium-based single-photon detectors designed for the visible to short-wave infrared range. What makes this interesting is the combination of infrared sensitivity, near-room-temperature operation, and compatibility with established CMOS manufacturing . That matters because it opens a path not only to strong performance in the lab, but also to more compact and scalable systems .
Why is germanium such an interesting material here?
Because it is naturally better suited to infrared light than pure silicon . At the same time, it can be integrated into a manufacturing world built for scale. That combination of physics and manufacturability is essential when a promising concept is meant to become usable infrastructure.
What is the key message for World Quantum Day?
Quantum physics will not transform industry through buzzwords. It will do so through hardware that makes complex physics practical . World Quantum Day celebrates the discovery of the quantum world. For us, it is also a reminder that the real opportunity lies in building the bridge from quantum science to robust, usable technology .
