GeQD (Germanium Quantum Detectors) is a deep-tech spin-off of the University of Stuttgart (Institute of Semiconductor Engineering). The team develops germanium-on-silicon single-photon detectors for the short-wave infrared (SWIR) range, built on CMOS-compatible semiconductor processes. The goal is operation without complex cryogenics — room-temperature operation is a development target and has not yet been demonstrated.

Long version

GeQD develops germanium-on-silicon single-photon detectors for short-wave infrared (SWIR) applications such as quantum communication (QKD), quantum sensing, LiDAR and photonics. Today's detectors in this wavelength range require either expensive III/V materials or cryogenic cooling. GeQD pursues an approach based on established, CMOS-compatible semiconductor processes, intended to enable scalability and cost advantages in the long run. The project is at TRL 4, targeting TRL 5 by 2027/2028. All performance figures for future products are model-based target values. GeQD is funded through EXIST Forschungstransfer (grant 03EFBW0326) with approx. €1.2 M and is part of the QuantumBW network.
